Superstitions and Beliefs in Hinduism. 

What is a Superstition?

"A superstition is a belief in something that is not justified by any reason or evidence". 

Every culture on earth has its own superstitions, traditions that are passed down from generations. It is also same with India as well. Many of these beliefs have to do with providing protection from evil spirits etc. though India is a fast developing country there are many people who still believe and have strong faith in these. In India superstition is important because people believe that it often predict future which can be good or bad.





Superstitions that are believed that often have related to Good Luck.

  • Seeing a Peacock on a journey is considered lucky.
  • When someone who is going on a trip or on a important work sees a married lady with flowers on her head, Kumkum on her forehead, it is believed that the on which thing they are going will be successful.
  • If you see an elephant on your way to your destination, your purpose of going will be productive. It is believed that Lord Ganesh, of Hindu mythology removes all the obstacles on the way.
  • Unlike in other countries, according to Hindu mythology if you notice a crow cawing near your house. You are likely to get visitors to your house. 
  • To avoid seeing anything unpleasant in the morning, many people look at the palms of their hands as soon as they awaken and recite the invocation. It is believed "In the tips of the fingers resides Goddess Lakshmi; In the middle Goddess Sarasvati; In the palm of the hand resides Goddess Parvathi. 
  • A mirror, a pot full of water, a light, a pair of fish, a flag and turmeric are all auspicious things to witness. When getting up from bed in the early morning, if a person is lucky to see any of these favorable articles, it will bring them good luck.
  • If person see a lotus flower, gold, the sun, fire, a temple tower, a hill with signs of rain, a cowing calf, his own right hand, a black monkey, are also considered a good luck.
  • The colour, stripes, spots, twittering or chirping of a lizard when it falls on a person's body is said to predict the future. 
  • If you hear a lizard making noise on the ceiling or on the wall, while a discussion is going on, it is believed that the other person speaking truth. 
  • It is believed that if a girls horoscope matches well with a boys horoscope, at the time of their marriage then they will have a successful married life. 
  • If a males right hand is itchy and a females left hand is itchy then it is considered as good luck and they are going to get some good news.
  • There is a strong belief in the power of dreams. Dreaming of anything related to auspicious things is seen as good.
  • Eating sweet curd before an exam/going on an important task will bring good luck.

Superstitions that are believed that often have related to Good Luck.

    • Continues hiccups are considered a sign that someone close to you is remembering you in a negative way.
    • While leaving home, seeing a widow or a barren woman(incapable of producing offspring) is not lucky. 
    • When any person leaving house to go to work or to do anything outside if anyone sneeze it is considered as bad.
    • While leaving your house, hearing the shrill sound(high pitched and sharp) of a peacock is considered bad.
    • If you are going to somewhere and see a cat especially a black cat it is considered to be a bad.
    • Sweeping the house at night is not good.
    • For fear of evil spirits, nails should not be cut in the night.
    • Witnessing an owl over the house top is a sure sign of approaching destruction.
    • When there is a death in the family the members are not supposed to go to a temple or light a lamp at home for 15 days were the worship gods.
    • If the right eye of the man and left eye of woman twitches then it is not good.
    • If a males left hand is itchy and a females right hand is itchy then it is considered as bad and they are going to get some bad news or they will cry for something.
    • Keeping footwear upside down brings some issues to that person.
    • It is believed Tuesday is a bad day to reach anybody's home from a journey. It is also believed in some parts of India not to cut or shave or trim hair.
    • It is believed that people should not make payments on Fridays, except when giving some small amount to beggars. 
    • It is believed on Saturday  purchasing metal or anything related metal is considered bad and it brings problems in financial terms.
    • If you hear a dog whining at night, it will bring bad luck.
    • If a married woman wears white cloths it is considered inauspicious.
    • After her husband's death his widow shouldn't wear colourful sarees or Kumkum on her forehead. Although this one is changing. 
    • Food is not cooked in a house where death has occurred and it is advised to that family to leave that house for a year or so. 
    • There are number of activities are avoided to do after sunset some of them are : Lending Salt, Butter, Milk, White articles, Needles, Matchbox, Starting a fire for someone else, Selling of Kumkum or Turmeric, Cutting of one's Nails or Hair, Mentioning words that denote a snake or a barber.

    Conclusion 

    At the end these superstitions and beliefs are followed from generations and will also be followed. Some may be changed but may not be left untouched.
